Progress Database Engineer

This position reports to the Vice President of Data Center Services.

Position Summary:

This person manages and supports internal and external client back-office database needs. Responsibilities include: schema design, troubleshooting, data recovery, sizing, performance tuning, replication, documentation, and configuration. This person is responsible for managing multiple instances of Progress and SQL Server 2000 & 2005, existing databases and development of new databases. Additional responsibilities also include analyzing and tuning performance problems in Progress and SQL programming code, improving Progress SQL Server management procedures and processes, optimization of Progress and SQL code and creating and maintaining maintenance scripts for databases maintenance of database servers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Monitors work volumes and takes action to ensure requests are processed accurately within SLA's. Advises management of critical situations.
  • Designs, installs, maintains and enhances both physical and logical databases for specific applications considering client needs, information security, and cost effectiveness.
  • Assures compatibility and efficiency of database applications through ongoing system monitoring and evaluation.
  • Provides technical expertise with database management to the Infrastructure Support team, the Development Team and other IT personnel.
  • Work with Storage Engineer to allocate system storage and determine future storage requirements for all databases.
  • Enrolls users and maintains system security by controlling and monitoring user access to databases or specific data, establishes security and access policies for all DB instances.
  • Installs and upgrades the Oracle server and application tools.
  • Establishes a standard for all installs and upgrades and provide documentation on standardized install procedures for all dB components.
  • Works closely with other IT groups to coordinate current and future plans and activities including coordination and technical assistance to facilitate specific development projects that involve the computing environment, the coordination of software upgrades and the installation of new products.
  • Provides weekly and monthly reports on system problems and their solutions, as well as assisting in forecasts of future utilization and equipment requirements.
  • Has ability to influence, negotiate, and effectively participate in cross-functional teams with internal and external customers.
  • Is available for rotating on-call 24/7 support for production environments.
  • Participates in and/or manage special projects as assigned by Management.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BS/A degree in relevant field, unless there is significant relevant work experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of hands-on Progress dB support experience with versions 9.x – 10.x.
  • A minimum of three (3 years of hands-on SQL dB support experience with SQL 2000 - 2005.
  • Experience using Oracle and 3rd Party database management tools and processes.
  • Systems development experience, including working with business owners in defining detailed requirements, working with technical staff to review technical design documents and supporting overall implementation activities.
  • Solid understanding of data center operations and production control processes and procedures.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and solve problems.
  • A team player, highly motivated and detail oriented. Ability to work in an environment at a fast pace and with changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Positive attitude and strong customer service orientation. Able to manage multiple concurrent activities with critical deadlines.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions or procedures.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with Life, Annuities, Benefit Plan or Financial Service products and services .
  • Thorough knowledge of Progress and SQL architectures
  • Knowledge of overall computer operations. procedures, operating systems and platforms; Progress and SQL database management, systems, languages, procedures and controls.
  • Ability to work independently on complex problems, making detailed analysis until the problem is identified and resolved.
